The Challenge

DEVK's alerting setup connected team-owned monitoring with a central operations center. As monitoring became more decentralized across teams, DEVK still needed to maintain centralized alerting and on-call operations.

The move from Opsgenie to ilert was not only a tool replacement. DEVK needed to migrate a complex operational setup while supporting regulatory requirements, Terraform-based workflows, and team-specific alerting needs.

Key challenges included:

  • Moving off Opsgenie without disrupting alert handling
  • Keeping centralized alerting stable across decentralized teams
  • Supporting regulatory and contract requirements
  • Enabling Terraform-based configuration
  • Establishing consistent on-call practices across teams

Without a structured migration approach, DEVK would have had to move teams, alert sources, and escalation workflows while maintaining operational continuity across business-critical IT services.

The Solution

DEVK chose ilert to replace Opsgenie.

These requirements also shaped the choice. As an EU-built and hosted platform, ilert aligned with DEVK's regulatory and data residency obligations as a German insurer. Native Terraform support let teams manage alerting as code within their existing workflows, and a team-based model let individual teams own their alert sources while central operations kept oversight.

Rather than a hard cutover, DEVK moved step by step, running both systems in parallel while teams transitioned their alert sources and workflows. Using ilert's native Opsgenie integration, DEVK forwarded alerts from Opsgenie into ilert during the migration, moving operational alert handling into ilert first, then transitioning the remaining sources over time.

With ilert, DEVK:

  • Ran Opsgenie and ilert in parallel throughout the migration
  • Migrated alert handling and alert sources team by team
  • Managed alerting configuration through Terraform

The Results

DEVK's migration to ilert gave it a structured path off Opsgenie while keeping alert handling active throughout the transition.

  • Migrated around 35 teams and 100 alert sources in phases
  • Parallel operation kept alert handling stable through the rollout
  • Terraform support improved traceability and configuration management
  • Teams responded positively to ilert's more intuitive UI and clearer team ownership

With the migration complete, DEVK sees potential to expand ilert further, into areas such as status communication and broader stakeholder visibility.

Whenever we get stuck, we now have support that we can actually use. The product is easier to use, and my colleagues find the UI much more intuitive.
